This 1 month course is conducted at University of North Dakota Flight Operations at the Grand Forks International Airport. Cadets have 3 hours of academic training a day. The topics include helicopter operations, aerodynamics, weather, helicopter performance, and emergency procedures. Cadets are tested on each of the areas of study. Each cadet has a 2 hour flight training period per day. This consists of a preflight briefing with the cadet's flight instructor. The aircraft undergoes a preflight inspection prior to the flight period. The cadet then performs a flight training lesson for 1 to 1.5 hours with an instructor on board. After the flight the cadet is debriefed by their flight instructor. Cadets must be able to obtain a FAA third class medical and FAA Student Pilot Certificate. They must have satisfactorily completed the flight training with competency to solo a Schweizer 300 helicopter (this is accomplished without an instructor on board). The final lesson in the flight course is an evaluation consisting of an oral exam and flight test. Besides soloing the aircraft, cadets will have approximately 18 hours of flight time. Cadets must pass all academic exams given in the ground school. |
